Gayle M. Marshall Transforms Life Experiences Into Mysteries and Stories for Readers of All Ages

North Carolina author, artist, and craftsperson draws inspiration from family, heritage, creativity, and personal experiences to create books for children and adults.

New York City, NY, September 30, 2026 — Author, artist, and craftsperson Gayle M. Marshall has transformed decades of personal experiences, creative pursuits, and family memories into a collection of books spanning children’s stories, mysteries, and works inspired by her Native American heritage.

Marshall lives on a small farm in North Carolina with her husband, Mike, where she continues to explore creativity through writing, painting, woodworking, and traditional crafts. An elder of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, she participates in powwows and creates Native American crafts, including walking sticks and rattles. Her artistic work also includes painting, woodburning, and designing one-of-a-kind fedora and western hats.

Marshall’s path to becoming an author developed later in life. At age 60, she earned an associate degree, achieved Dean’s List recognition, and completed her studies with a 4.0 grade-point average. Five years later, while working full time and pursuing a bachelor’s degree, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Although the diagnosis changed her plans, it did not stop her commitment to learning and creative expression.

She began writing seriously while supporting her close friend Alyce through years of breast cancer treatment. During that time, writing became a meaningful creative outlet and eventually developed into a broader collection of published works.

Marshall’s first book, Chronicles From the Funny Farm, was inspired by the many animals she had known throughout her life. The Beat of the Drum followed, reflecting her connection to her heritage. She later created The Magic Is Still Here series, a five-book children’s collection featuring animal characters inspired by names from her family.

Her interest in mystery writing grew from her fascination with forgotten places, family histories, antiques, and unanswered questions. Her mystery works include Echoes From the Past: The Mystery of Whitaker Farm, Train to Yesterday, The Forgotten Cemetery, and The Secret Found at the Estate Sale.

In The Secret Found at the Estate Sale, the story follows Marsha as she begins rebuilding her life after the death of her husband of 43 years. After purchasing an old Victorian writing desk at an estate sale, she discovers a hidden item that leads her and her friends into the unresolved story of a teenage girl who disappeared years earlier. The novel explores friendship, memories, and the secrets that can remain hidden within ordinary objects.

Relationships and personal connections continue to influence Marshall’s writing. Her longtime friendship with Alyce inspired elements of her stories, including characters named after meaningful people in her life. After Alyce passed away on May 22, 2026, and cancer affected her immediate family again, Marshall continued writing as a way to maintain focus during a challenging period.

“I think one of the most important things my own life has taught me is that you are never too old to learn something new or discover something you love,” said Marshall. “I hope my story might encourage someone else who thinks it is too late to begin something new.”

Through her books, Marshall continues exploring themes of family, friendship, heritage, small-town history, and the unexpected stories found in everyday experiences. Her work reflects a lifelong curiosity about people, places, and the hidden moments that inspire imagination.
